Embracing Growth: My Journey at a Three-Day Business Retreat

As a neurodiverse family therapist and neurodivergent individual, I recently embarked on a new adventure – my first three-day business retreat. The experience was not only overwhelming but also profoundly amazing, offering me insights and growth in unexpected ways.

Decision to Attend the Retreat

My decision to attend this retreat, despite it not being explicitly tailored for neurodivergent individuals, was driven by its unique value proposition. The retreat offered a combination of 10 months of business mentoring and a three-day event packed with diverse speakers, presenting a cost-effective way to gain substantial business support.

The Retreat Experience

Held at the picturesque Adelaide Hills Convention Center, the retreat’s serene environment, complete with a pool, jumping castle, and scenic walks, was a delight. However, my focus was more on the content than the amenities. Having followed the organisers, The Seven Effect, for three years on social media, I felt it was the right time to attend, armed with a solid foundation in my business and personal values.

“I had invested a significant portion of money and time. I had to cancel three days’ worth of clients to be there. So if anything will find me motivation, it’s the money. I like my money. And so if I have invested time and money into something, then I will do the things.”

Community and Mentorship

The retreat showcased the unique mentorship style of Jody from The Seven Effect. It wasn’t about idolizing a figure but about sharing knowledge and connections. This approach was evident in the ‘shared stage’ ethos, where each presenter was a mentee of Jody, reflecting a community-focused and collaborative spirit.

Strategies for Maximising the Retreat Experience

To fully embrace the retreat, I adopted several strategies:

  • Suspend Disbelief: The enthusiastic, ‘happy clappy’ atmosphere was initially overwhelming but genuinely supportive.
  • Utilizing Personal Tools: I brought along ‘George,’ my personal aid, which helped in reducing my nervous system’s heightened state and served as a conversation starter.
  • Overcoming Social Challenges: As a newcomer, I found the community welcoming, making it easier to engage in conversations and network.

Finding Community and Networking

The retreat allowed me to cast a wider net than usual, moving beyond the limited circles of school or work. This broad spectrum of attendees included people from various backgrounds, offering a rich environment for finding kindred souls. My experiences with groups like Yellow Ladybugs have also underscored the value of such diverse networking opportunities.

Recap and Takeaways

Reflecting on my retreat experience, several key takeaways emerge:

  • Research: Understanding the community and the organizers beforehand is crucial.
  • Suspend Disbelief: Embracing the atmosphere and the genuine enthusiasm of the participants enhances the experience.
  • Find Your Tools: Identifying personal aids or strategies that help you engage more effectively is essential.
  • Embrace Community: Accepting and being open to the wider community offers opportunities to find your tribe.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to Jody and The Seven Effect for creating such an inclusive and welcoming environment for women in business. The retreat was a testament to the power of acceptance and community in fostering personal and professional growth.
